Story of Split is 17 centuries old, dating to the time the Roman Emperor Diocletian decided to build his Palace on the peninsula close to Roman city Salona. Palace was built as a luxury villa, a summer residence where Diocletian choose to spend the remaining years of his life. Amid these 1700 years, the Palace gradually transformed into a city, which right up ’til today draws attention with its magnificent history, rich tradition, as well as natural and cultural heritage. Diocletian\u2019s Palace and the historical nucleus of Split have been on the UNESCO World Heritage list as far back as 1979 and not only due to the exceptional conservation of the Palace, yet due to the fact that Palace and its city (or the city and its Palace) keep living the full life. Every layer of old Rome, from medieval times up to today, is as unerring and alive in this structure.
